Welcome to Sail Josefine

How would you like to experience the sight and sound and feel of a traditional wooden sailing boat?

Josefine is a 66 ft traditional Danish wooden boat, constructed of oak on oak, restored to high standards of comfort and safety. Her home port is Watchet and she operates in the South West of England, covering the beautiful unspoilt coastal areas of Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, Pembrokeshire, Lundy, the Scilly Isles to the South, and Waterford in Southern Ireland to the West.

She carries a skipper and crew and can accommodate up to 12 visitors for day sailing, and 6 people for overnight cruising. Guests are welcome to help run the boat, by setting sails, navigating, or taking the helm.
Josefine, (not spelt Josephine) with her timeless environment and versatile rig, is ideally suited for team building: promoting the communication and understanding that are vital in any team or organisation.

About the Boat

Josefine was built by Anderson and Ferdinandsen in Denmark and first registered in 1931. She is constructed of oak on oak, and rigged as a gaff ketch. Her first 40 years were spent ring seine fishing in the Baltic and North Sea, and she was often away for weeks at a time before returning to port with a live catch.

In 1975 she was re-commissioned as a sail-training vessel, working out of Denmark until 1989 when she was re-registered under the British flag and relocated to the south coast of England.

Between 2000-2002 she was completely rebuilt and refitted on the south coast, and then relocated to Gibraltar. In 2003 she was purchased by the 10th and present custodian who sailed her, with the help of a few friends, from Gibraltar to Watchet Somerset.

Team Building
She has since completed a number of interesting voyages. These have been interleaved with work for M.C.A (Maritime Coastguard Agency) compliance so that more people can experience sailing in her.

She carries two anchors, each with their own gear and windlass. The main anchor windlass is electric. She has a comprehensive set of modern instruments in the wheelhouse.

Rigged as a gaff ketch, the total sail area is 1800 square feet. The sails are, from the bow: flying jib, jib, staysail, main, main top sail, mizzen staysail, mizzen and mizzen top sails. The combinations of this sail wardrobe mean that there are many possibilities to suit prevailing conditions.

She is licensed to carry up to 12 people for day trips, and will accommodate up to 6 people for extended overnight cruising.

The decks are spacious, with a comfortable relaxation area at the stern, and a spacious wheelhouse to shelter from the weather.

The living quarters below comprise a spacious galley, versatile accommodation, toilet and shower. There is a 12/24 Volt DC wiring system with access points for personal equipment, and 240 Volt AC points when connected to shore facilities.
